On re-collecting and other moves

click for video: Quicktime / .m4v for iPod/Pad / direct streaming for PC

“ Reminiscences, even extensive ones, do not always amount to an autobiography. For autobiography has to do with time, with sequence and what makes up the continuous flow of life. Here, I am talking of a space, of moments and discontinuities. For even if minutes and quarter-hours appear here, it is in the form they have in the moment of recollection. This strange voodle form -- it may be called fleeting or eternal -- is in neither case the stuff that life is made of: it is but a short, captured moment, shared by two individual who witnessed its contours, in situ…"

During a recent, short week-end in Paris, Sam Renseiw re-collected, all the while re-miniscing, in memorable company. On rites of passage

click for video: Quicktime / .m4v for iPod / direct streaming for PC

" And yet, and yet . . . Denying temporal succession, denying the self, denying the astronomical universe, are apparent desperations and secret consolations. Time is the substance we are made of. Time is a river which sweeps us along, but we are the river.."

Travelling at high speed in a fjord, Sam Renseiw remembered the exquisite prose of Borges, quickly paraphrasing a passage. On the persistence of place - part two

click for video: Quicktime / .m4v for iPod / direct streaming for Pc at Blip.tv

"A voodle is more than a visual structure or series of moving images; it is the dialogue it establishes with its viewer and the intonation it imposes upon his/her sight and the changing and durable imprints it leaves in his/her memory. A voodle is not an isolated being: it is a relationship, an axis of innumerable relationships."

"Oh longing for places that were not/Cherished enough in that fleeting hour /How I long to make good from far/The forgotten gesture, the additional act." remembers Sam Renseiw, paraphrasing some Rilke while assembling cottage footage, hermit-wise, back home. On the persistence of place

click for video: Quicktime / .m4v for iPod / direct streaming for PC at Blip.tv

"Music, states of happiness, mythology, houses, faces belabored by time, certain twilights and certain places try to tell us something, or have said something we should not have missed, or are about to say something; this imminence of a revelation which does not occur is, perhaps, the aesthetic phenomenon."

No house is any house and one single house can be all houses, muses Sam Renseiw while capturing footage of the acquisition of a necessary key to open the doorway to yet another house. On the morphology of space and body

clik for video: Quicktime / .m4v for iPod / direct streaming for PC at Blip.tv

"A man sets out to draw the world. As the years go by, he peoples a space with moving images of provinces, kingdoms, streets, bays, ships, islands, chairs, rooms, instruments, stars, horses, and individuals. A short time before he dies, he discovers that the patient labyrinth of lines traces the lineaments of his own face."

Every voodle seems to be an ideal plane inserted into the realm of reality, muses Sam Renseiw while compiling an intriguing, fairly complex and condensed montage of interior gazes, extracted back into outward appearances. View the puzzling, fragmented piece, encompassing a personal endoscopic travel, fixed interior tableaux of otherwise inaccessible theatrical spaces and reflective vistas of minute, fleeting passage by clicking here or on the links above. On preserves and oblique illuminations

click for video: Quicktime / .m4v for iPod / other versions for PC

"When I travel through my room, I rarely follow a straight line: I go from the table towards a picture hanging in a corner; from there, I set out obliquely towards the door; but even though, when I begin, it really is my intention to go there, if I happen to meet my armchair en route, I don’t think twice about it, and settle down in it without further ado."

Likewise de Maistre's interior travels, Sam Renseiw just happened to stop at a surreally decorated shop window, on the way home from a opera evening with the grim tale of Heart in a Plastic Bag still echoing. On Ether(nity) and the "ur" of simulation

click for video: Quicktime / .m4v for iPod / other versions for PC

"Whether scientific or mytho-poeic, both kind of ether provide an imaginary solution to the problem of illumination. Even light itself must express the ontological expediency of an imagined paradigm. Just as quantum physics has shown that measuring a perception converts a potentiality into an existence by collapsing a wave function, realising reality rather that reporting it, so also does 'pataphysics reveal that the function of navigators was to make land - not to find it."

Further fathoming the expanses of Dr.Faustroll's Ether, Sam Renseiw recorded an interior stroll, ending with an ur vertigo - inducing staircase gaze. On idle details and protrusions

click for video: Quicktime / .m4v for iPod / other versions at Blip.tv

“ Libraries are not built of stone; all is built on sand, but we must build libraries as if the sand were stone, then they will grow...and what is more important in a library than anything else - than everything else - is the fact that it exists... I cannot walk through the library in the solitude of the day without thinking that the library pleases us because it accentuates idle details, just as our memory does; Thus, voodling from inside a library is nothing more than a guided dream, creating a momentary garden: a blurred, visual aide-memoire ”

Visiting the local library, Sam Renseiw focused on an protruding, seemingly idle detail on the back wall, oozing with a quiet, powerful poetic presence. View the palindromic loop by clicking here or on the links above. (patafilm # 577,02'33'', 13.4MB, Quicktime/mov - other versions at Blip.tv)

On thin ice voodling

"I treasured a compliment the clown paid me on today's occasion. I liked to recall it against visitations of doubt and despondency. He came up to me after he had been overwhelmingly excellent and congratulated me on my own contribution, saying: ‘I never know whether I prefer to precede you or to follow you — you’re such a high-jumping voodler.’ It was very generous coming from a master."

Combining goofy voodling with urban ice-skating, Sam Renseiw donned his skates - the first time this winter season - to meet the local clown. On forking paths

click for video: Quicktime version / Flash version

"Meanwhile, looking from the window, they could see the world racing past them. At one moment, they were rattling through a solitude; the next, a village had grown up around them; a few breaths more, and it had vanished, as if swallowed by an earthquake. The spires of meeting-houses seemed set adrift from their foundations; the broad-based hills glided away. Everything was unfixed from its age-long rest, and moving at whirlwind speed in a direction opposite to their own."

Voodling happily along a different hood, Sam Renseiw pondered on the fact that every voodle creates its own precursors. The work might modifies our conception of the past, as it might modify the future, yet the original is always unfaithful to the translation. On fenced worlds of sand

click for video: Quicktime version / Flash version

"Ts'ui Pên must have said once: I am withdrawing to capture video footage of reality. And another time: I am withdrawing to construct a labyrinth. Everyone imagined two works; to no one did it occur that the videos and the maze were one and the same thing."

Walking on the outskirts of a crudely fenced sand world on the other side of the shoreline, Sam Renseiw, barefooted and puzzled by the following stroboscopic experience, recorded some footage while continuing his paytaphysical visual experiments. On the art of memory mapping

click for: Quicktime version / Flash version

"In that Empire, the Art of cartography attained such Perfection that the map of a single Province occupied the entirety of a City, and the map of the Empire, the entirety of a Province. In time, those Disproportionated Maps no longer satisfied, and the Cartographers Guilds built a Map of the Empire whose size was that of the Empire, and which coincided accurately with it."

Further mapping the tracing of his eye, Sam Renseiw encountered some memory moves i real time and framed them, with two slight cuts. The halting and rudimentary art of reading

click for: Quicktime version / Flash version

"Menard (perhaps without wanting to) has enriched, by means of a new technique, the halting and rudimentary art of reading: this new technique is that of the deliberate anachronism and the erroneous attribution. This technique, whose applications are infinite, prompts us to go through the Odyssey as if it were posterior to the Aeneid and the book Le jardin du Centaure of Madame Henri Bachelier as if it were by Madame Henri Bachelier. This technique fills the most placid works with adventure."

Undertaking a Voyage around the Room during the Easter break, Sam Renseiw offers a candid excerpt of bookshelf's, complete with hypnotic hologram harpsichord sound. the hesitant art of watching films

" Renseiw (perhaps without wishing to) has enriched, by means of a new technique, the hesitant and rudimentary art of watching films: the technique is one of deliberate anachronism and erroneous attributions. This technique, with its infinite applications, urges us to run through Citizen Cane as if it were filmed after Breathless and to view Belle de jour by Luis Bunuel as if it were by Luis Bunuel . This technique would fill the dullest films with adventure. Would not the attributing of The Big sleep to Alfred Hitchcock or Orson Welles be a sufficient renovation of its tenuous spiritual counsels" Sam Renseiw , Director of “ Bande à part "

ambiguity, redundance and deficiency

" These ambiguities, redundances, and deficiences recall those attributed by Dr. Franz Kuhn to a certain Chinese encyclopedia entitled Celestial Emporium of Benevolent Knowledge. On those remote pages it is written that animals are divided into (a) those that belong to the Emperor, (b) embalmed ones, (c) those that are trained, (d) suckling pigs, (e) mermaids, (f) fabulous ones, (g) stray dogs, (h) those that are included in this classification, (i) those that tremble as if they were mad, (j) innumerable ones, (k) those drawn with a very fine camel's hair brush, (l) others, (m) those that have just broken a flower vase, (n) those that resemble flies from a distance."

I know it's from Borges said Sam, all the while the video seems to trace some kind of fool. Maybe a wise one, maybe, not. enter
