On slow backyard derive

" The sustainability analysis of the absolute or relative character of fissures in the urban network, of the role of micro-climates, of distinct neighbourhoods with no relation to administrative boundaries, and above all of the dominating action of centers of attraction, must be utilised and completed by psycho-geographical methods. The objective passional terrain of the derive must be defined in accordance both with its own logic and with its relations with social morphology."

Laying out psycho-geographical recordings from a recent urban back yard dérive in the form of an ultra slow, attentive documentation, Sam Renseiw regrets the very short time allocated to comprehend the complex site. On high point derive voodling

click for video: Quicktime / .m4v for iPod/iPad / direct streaming for PC

" What makes most documentaries so easy to understand is the arbitrary limitation of their subject matter. They confine themselves to depicting fragmented social functions and their isolated products. In contrast, imagine the full complexity of a voodled moment that is not resolved into a work, a moment whose development contains interrelated facts and values and whose meaning is not yet apparent. This confused totality could be the subject matter of such a voodle."

Recently on derive high up in a fixed cultural setting, Sam Renseiw attempts to record excerpts of a specific urban microclimate; View the contours of the distinctively psychogeographical vortex-voodle by clicking here or on the links above. On voodle derive in confined spaces

click for video: Quicktime / .m4v for iPad/iPhone / direct streaming for PC

"...If chance plays an important role in dérives this is because the methodology of psychogeographical observation is still in its infancy. But the action of chance is naturally conservative and in a new setting tends to reduce everything to habit or to an alternation between a limited number of variants. Progress means breaking through fields where chance holds sway by creating new conditions more favorable to voodling purposes.."

Caught on a strife of almost random urban derive, Sam Renseiw retreats into an internal spatial field; View the concocted psychogeographical voodle by clicking here or on the links above. (patafilm # 764, 03'30''. 58MB, Quicktime/mov - other versions at Blip.tv)

Expect: more derives from surprising places in the near future. Best, SamR.

On derive at World's End

click for video. Quicktime / .m4v for iPod/iPhone / direct streaming for PC

" I have neither the scholar's melancholy, which is emulation, nor the musician's, which is fantastical, nor the courtier's, which is proud, nor the soldier's, which is ambitious, nor the lawyer's, which is politic, nor the lady's, which is nice, nor the lover's, which is all these: but it is a melancholy of mine own, compounded of many simples, extracted from many objects, and indeed the sundry's contemplation of my travels, in which my often rumination wraps me in a most humorous sadness. "

Editing morsels of recent footage, Sam Renseiw sudently struck with hefty melancholy, speculates on the possible futility of voodling, its frailty and non-object status in a world dominated by the tangible functional. On temporal and narrative voodle disorders

click for video: Quicktime / .m4v for iPod / direct streaming for PC at Blip.tv

"We are left to grasp hold of a story constructed of allusions that leaves us in a place of indeterminate temporal and narrative disorder in which concretization of the whole appears unattainable. When confronted with a work, shamelessly undisclosed and unresolved the viewer assumes an invigorating, empowered role where a myriad of potential narratives await completion."

Recently embedded in Sensuous Knowledge, Sam Renseiw investigated the depths of Unloud's unfolding in the wizardry of an appropriate cave in Os . On derive and psychogeographic voodle

clcik for video: Quicktime / .m4v for iPod / direct streaming for PC at Blip.tv

"One or more persons committed to the derive abandon, for an undefined period of time, the motives generally admitted for action and movement, their relations, their labor and leisure activities, abandoning themselves to the attractions of the terrain and the encounters proper to it....to be drawn by the solicitations of the terrain"

Abandoning himself to a short moment of derive, Sam Renseiw re-viewed some known, local locations from a different, drifting perspective. On the psychogeography of voodles

“ They travel to communicate, either to somebody. Or you just travel, driving, that means you are communicating with yourself through machines, like psychoanalysis. When you drive without reasons that is exactly like voodle feedback. Voodle feedback is communicating with yourself through machines. The psychic existence is the same whether you drive or if you do simple voodle feedbacks, it’s the same ontological structure.”

Exploring the ontology of psychocartography in voodles, Sam Renseiw paraphrases NJ Paik, while re-assembling a prospective projection, sequenced partly of exotic imagery, attentive voyeurism and remixed spoken word (including a monkey's grove). I am a dreamer of treated images

click for: Quicktime version / Flash version

“I am a dreamer of images, of accumulated images. I think I am seeing; a move stops me. I leave the context. The syllables of the image begin to move around. Stressed accents begin to invert. The gesture abandons its meaning like an overload which is too heavy and prevents dreaming. Then another movement take on other meanings as if they had the right to be impertinent. And the picture wander away, looking in the nooks and crannies of psychogeographical vocabulary for new company.”

Still having after effects from a recent choreographic exercise presentation, Sam Renseiw re-frames bits of footage, a creation of desire, not a creation of need. The snow queen's psychogeography

click for: Quicktime version / Flash version

"There was once a dreadfully wicked hobgoblin. One day he was in capital spirits because he had made a looking-glass which reflected everything that was good and beautiful in such a way that it dwindled almost to nothing, but anything that was bad and ugly stood out very clearly and looked much worse. The most beautiful landscapes looked like boiled spinach, and the best people looked repulsive or seemed to stand on their heads with no bodies."

No hobgoblin of that sort, yet still speculating about the nature of Vlogging and other psychogeographical practices, Sam Renseiw captured some marvellous voodling footage from the Snow Queen's recent ice dance, posted right on time for H.C.Andersen's 202 birthday. View the gliding by clicking here or on the links above. (patafilm # 381, 01'49'', 8.2 MB, Quicktime/mov - Flash version at Blip.tv - The fine sound track mash-up is inspired by the poetic audio-troves on Jimmi B 's # 72.)
