On memory as place and interior journeys

" Memory as a place, as a building, as a sequence of columns, cornices, porticoes, rooms enfilade. The body inside the mind, as if we were moving around in there, going from one place to the next [..] To realise that one's steps, by taking one nowhere, are taking one nowhere but into oneself...What we are really doing when we submerge in a voodle is thinking, and thinking in such a way that our thoughts (re)compose a journey.[..] and even if we do not leave our room, it has been a journey, and we might safely say that we have been somewhere, even if we don't know where it is."

After recently having [casually] passed through an animated series of didactic spaces, Sam Renseiw attempted to reconstruct bits of hastily recorded footage into another tale, altogether. On the loss of objects in personal spaces

click for video : Quicktime / .m4v for iPod/iPhone / Direct streaming for PC

"I have no words for it. I am speechless and numb. A vast melancholy engulfs me; it happened, in the space of a fortnight: The shattering of the blue glass float and the driftwood sofa's disappearance. One occurrence was an act of will, the other due to common clumsiness. The sofa is now gone, cargoed away back to its maker, replaced by chest of drawers. I have yet to glue the float together, but I suspect that it has Humpty-Dumpty qualities, after the fall. I considered both to be vital objects in my interior architectural conscience "

The sofa spend almost two decades poetically lurking in various corners of Sam Renseiw's den. The blue glass float for even longer. It lately survived in the kitchen, perpetrating its old Mediterranean aura with an aloof, benign metaphysical presence. " The four and twenty letters make no more variety of words in diverse languages, than melancholy conceits produces diversity of symptoms in several persons. They are irregular, obscure, various, so infinite...you may as well make the moon a new coat, as a true character of a melancholy in man..."

Walking the confines of melancholy at World's End, Sam Renseiw ponders on the whereabouts of Troy and Mycenae, the songs of spring, the lightness of creative being and other Ubi Sunt. On derive at World's End

click for video. Quicktime / .m4v for iPod/iPhone / direct streaming for PC

" I have neither the scholar's melancholy, which is emulation, nor the musician's, which is fantastical, nor the courtier's, which is proud, nor the soldier's, which is ambitious, nor the lawyer's, which is politic, nor the lady's, which is nice, nor the lover's, which is all these: but it is a melancholy of mine own, compounded of many simples, extracted from many objects, and indeed the sundry's contemplation of my travels, in which my often rumination wraps me in a most humorous sadness. "

Editing morsels of recent footage, Sam Renseiw sudently struck with hefty melancholy, speculates on the possible futility of voodling, its frailty and non-object status in a world dominated by the tangible functional.
