On cognitive time-space synaestesia

click for video: Quicktime / .m4v for iPad/iPhone / direct streaming for PC

"Voodling removes one from the night and the day at the same time. It can neither bring into question nor bring into action this world that binds us.... the mind feels agitated, while in an aesthetic judgment about the beautiful in nature it is in restful contemplation. This agitation (above all at its inception) can be compared with a vibration, i.e. with a rapid alternation of repulsion from, and attraction to, one and the same object. If a thing is excessive for the imagination (and the imagination is driven to such excess as it apprehends the thing in intuition), then the thing is, as it were, an abyss in which the imagination is afraid to lose itself."

After another hectic work period, Sam Renseiw found time to re-collect parts of nevertheless acquired and amassed footage. Take a short peak into the concocted docu-voodled space of a (real) synaesthesia (psychology)lab with some added appearances. Click here or on the links above. On not-knowing and voodling

click for video: Quicktime / Flash / direct streaming for PC

" Voodling is a process of dealing with not-knowing, a forcing of what and how.... The not-knowing is crucial to art, is what permits art to be made. Without the scanning process engendered by not-knowing, without the possibility of having the mind move in unanticipated directions, there would be no invention.... The not-knowing is not simple, because it's hedged about with prohibitions, roads that may not be taken. The more serious the voodler, the more problems he takes into account and the more considerations limit his possible initiatives...so a not-knowing curiosity might be a way of seeing one's way out of a place. Sort of looking beyond, lusting with the eye... and: if we don't call it art, it's usually more interesting."

Inspired by a recent post from Solublefish, Sam Renseiw promptly and enthusiastically collaged left-over footage into a fragmented, Barthelme-like piece of cut-up work of bodies in space(s). On intuitively voodling consciousness frames

click for video : Quicktime / .m4v for iPod/IPhone / direct streaming for PC

" Voodling appears to take in the whole field of view in the scenes represented. But it gives a false description of the view, according to the rules of the art, employing the signs that result from the incidence of the lines of vision. By this means, the higher and the lower points in the view, and those between, are preserved; and some objects seem to appear in the foreground, and others in the background, and other to appear in some other way, on the smooth and level surface. So also philosophers copy the truth, after the manner of voodling."

[Most of the propositions and questions in voodles arise from a failure to understand the logic of visual language. (They belong to the same class as the question whether the good is more or less identical to the beautiful.) And it is not surprising that the deepest problems are in fact not problems at all.]

Inspired by the constancy of fine visual experiments emanating from Quebec, Sam Renseiw set about to re-frame a casual 360° rounding of a rectangular building, establishing a drone like frame for spatial sense and reference investigation(s). On space-voodling and sheer attention

Click for video: Quicktime / .m4v for iPod / direct streaming for PC at Blip.tv

"As soon as a person appears who has something primitive about him, so that he does not say " one must accept the world as it is [...] but says " However the world is, I shall retain an originality which I do not mean to alter in accordance with the world's wishes" : At the moment these words are heard, the whole of existence is transformed. As in the fairy-tale, when the word is spoken, the castle opens after being enchanted for a hundred years, and everything comes to life: so existence turns into sheer attention."

Re-framing recent footage from two exquisite locations in Frogner/Oslo, Sam Renseiw pondered on the exuberance of the introverted ontological nature of space phenomenology. On rendered perceptions and other spaces

click for video: Quicktime / .m4v for iPod / other versions at Blip.tv

"On one level, experience is so ambiguous that the rhythm of a sound brings about the merging of cinematographic images and creates space that allows for a perception of movement, whereas this succession of images would be too slow without this acoustic sustenance to evoke stroboscopic movement."

Dabbling with crude rendering, Sam Renseiw once again attempts to convey a sense of synaesthesia into circular travelling camera moves. Curtains, pencils, ballots & other images

"The exercise of power is determined by thousands of interactions between the world of the powerful and that of the powerless, all the more so because these worlds are never divided by a sharp line: everyone has a small part of himself in both... If we are to change our world view, images have to change. The voodler now has a very important job to do. He's not a little peripheral figure entertaining rich people, he's really needed..."

Paraphrasing Vaclav Havel with two quotes above, Sam Renseiw also captured fresh election footage yesterday. "How little we know,/and when we know it!//It was prettily said that “No man/hath an abundance of cows on the plain, nor shards/in his cupboard.” Wait! I think I know who said that! It was...//Never mind, dears, the afternoon/will fold you up, along with preoccupations/that now seem so important, until only a child/running around on a unicycle occupies center stage./Then what will you make of walls? And I fear you will have to come up with something,//be it a terraced gambit above the sea/or gossip overheard in the marketplace."

Machines take over functions

click for: Quicktime version / Flash version

"Machines take over functions of the central nervous system, and no longer, as in the past, merely those of muscles. And with this differentiation - and not with steam engines and railroads - a clear division occurs between matter and information, the real and the symbolic"

Further reflecting on experiencing synaesthesia in reaction to a variety of media, Sam Renseiw undertook the capture of limited footage using a non-authorised vehicle through a delimited public space. Vexillology affairs

"PHIL 0.258. Philosophy of Law. What is law? What is the relationship of law to morality? What is the nature of judicial reasoning? Particular legal issues include the nature and status of liberty rights (the right to privacy including contraception, abortion, and homosexuality, and the right to die), the legitimacy of restrictions on speech and expression (flag burning and racist hate speech), and the nature of equality rights (race and gender). Readings include traditional, contemporary, and feminist legal theory, case studies, and court decisions. Open to first-year students. Enrollment limited to 30. Normally offered every year."

To focus precisely on the vision of icons

"Even if we want to retain the notion of aesthetic value, to the extent that a narrow aestheticism precludes our understanding of the anthropological and phenomenological dimensions of film icons, we must question this emphasis on the aesthetic object. I want to focus precisely on the vision of Voodles, on the asymmetrical exchange of glances that characterizes icon worship. I have elsewhere examined the various techniques of animation of the Voodle icon..."

Oh Moon, why are you so contemporary

"..During our sojourn in the Belgian countryside we rehearsed and watched the fog. At night we all went to the well and sang and blew saxophones and trombones until unearthly columns of reverberated sound were generated. Suddenly, the Dutch guy's prized Ziljian cymbal fell, careening down off the walls to the endless bottom - beyond the Earth's center. We froze, the Music evaporated ; afterwards we listened back to the recording and howled and tried to imagine how that amazing cymbal would ever come to life again from inside the well.."

Harry Smith seemed to get everwhere

"...Harry Smith not only seemed to get everywhere, he also gave the impression that he could do anything. He weaved in and out of various cultural milieux, many of them notorious, and turned his mind to countless different creative and cultural endeavours. In a time when computers had not yet nudged their way into everyday life, Smith was making a decent attempt to turn his brain into a multimedia hub, a receptacle capable of sucking in and spewing out various bits of data, juggling them around in new, enlightening ways..."

Sam Renseiw's interest in synæsthesia as non-rational, containing the capacity to transcend mundane existence stretches back to the Harry who used synæsthetic metaphors in order to construct an objective world that was more in tune with human subjectivity. Watch Harry Smith dance in a very rare footage here, or click on the cross-sensory perceptive abstraction above. (00'45'', 2.7MB, mov/quicktime ) / link update 10.10.15
