On the phenomenology of re-view & voodling

"... The former (structuralists), proceeding out of a higher logic, can envision a utopia of signs, of knowledge, and of communication, producing video forms that will be clear, just, and demystified. The latter (phenomenologists) are anxious to change nothing but instead to comprehend a process which flows along perfectly well on its own. Indeed, phenomenologists/voodlers have a longstanding distrust of pure reason, viewing rationality as a single mode of consciousness among others, a mode whose unquenchable thirst to swallow all experience must be restrained precisely because life itself tells us that experience is dearer and more trustworthy than schemes by which we seek to know and change it. [...] The careful manufacture of Voodles is, indeed, part of a broader phenomenological practice. "

Slowly coming to terms with new equipment, new formats and editing platforms, Sam Renseiw montaged bouts of concentrated interior re-viewing, part of a recent workshop, led by his alter-ego, for choreographers, dancers and scenographers. On the patamatics of interior voodle gaze

click for video: Quicktime / .m4v for iPod/iPhone / direct streaming for PC

" To live is to leave traces. In the interior these are emphasised. An abundance of covers and protectors, liners and cases are devised, on which the traces of objects of everyday use are imprinted. The traces of the occupant also leave their impressions on the interior....I can thus feel myself under the gaze of someone whose eyes I do not see, not even discern. From the moment this gaze exists, I am already something other, in that I feel myself becoming an object for the gaze of others. But in this position, which is a reciprocal one, others also know that I am an object who knows himself to be seen. "

Architecture is not simply a platform that accommodates the viewing subject. It is also a viewing mechanism that might produce the subject. It precedes and frames its occupants, and certainly exerts a moving theatricality in the expansive patamatics of the voodling gaze. On detournement of re-enactments

click for video : Quicktime / .m4v for Ipod/iPhone / direct streaming for PC

"Re-enactment is a phenomenon which has gained a footing in visual art in recent years. In this practice, historical material or material which already exists is reenacted. We know the genre from amateur actors’ staged reconstructions of dramatic historical events, battles or other acts of war. A re-enactment in art is not just a repetition of a given historical event, but also involves a re-evaluation of the historical occurrence in question, and also making it topical. The form is dependent on personal involvement and interaction, which means going beyond the precise or authoritative version of the story."

After performing a recent Reality Check, Sam Renseiw edited the gathered footage into a meta-re-enactment. View the detournement including two new layers by clicking here or on the links above. ( patafilm # 651, 02'54'' 18MB, Quicktime/mov - other versions at Blip.tv)

On the function of the mirror-stage

"I am led, therefore, to regard the function of the mirror-stage as a particular case of the function of the imago, which is to establish a relation between the organism and its reality – or, as they say, between the Innenwelt and Umwelt."

Reflecting on Lacan’s " Mirror Stage as Formative of the Function of the I " Sam Renseiw produced an ultra short piece of mirror(ed) footage. View it by clicking here or enter the ante-chambre above. (patafilm # 363, 00'34'', 2.6 MB, Quicktime/mov - Flash version at Blip.tv)
