On thresholds and contrivances

Such is the contrivance of the Voodler. And such is also that of our knowledge. Instead of attaching ourselves to the inner becoming of things, we place ourselves outside them in order to recompose their becoming artificially. We take snapshots, as it were, of the passing reality….We may therefore sum up…that the mechanism of our ordinary knowledge is of a cinematographical kind… Voodling is the one art form where the voodler can see himself as the creator of an unconditional reality…. In voodles man’s innate drive to self-assertion finds one of its fullest and most direct means of realisation. A Voodle is an emotional reality, and that is how the audience receives it -as a second reality."

Paraphrasing some older Bergson text quotes, Renseiw resumes a bit of voodling activity; As as fresh piece of docu-voodling, a short visual sequence of architectural (urban)thresholds and contrivances is layed-out anew, in another duration, for better (intro)spection. View the short elongated visual above, underlayed with a (sublime) bout of de Tapol soundtrack. [patafilm # 875, 01'53'', 208MB,Quicktime/mov, Vimeo]

On islands of calibrated form & duration(s)

“But, then, I cannot escape the objection that there is no state of mind, however simple, which does not change every moment, since there is no consciousness without memory, and no continuation of a state without the addition, to the present feeling, of the memory of past moments. It is this which constitutes duration. Inner duration is the continuous life of a memory which prolongs the past into the present, the present either containing within it in a distinct form the ceaselessly growing image of the past, or, more profoundly, showing by its continual change of quality the heavier and still heavier load we drag behind us as we grow older. Without this survival of the past into the present there would be no duration, but only instantaneity.”   …  “The world is not a solid continent of facts sprinkled by a few lakes of uncertainties, but a vast ocean of uncertainties speckled by a few islands of calibrated and stabilized forms”

While quoting both Bergson and Latour, Renseiw uploaded his latest visual concoction: a precise(ly) timed and crafted docu-voodle investigating in pataphysical manner(s) the Actor-Network theory and its repercussions in duration fields. On outer and inner space walks (3)

"If Bergson believed anything," Hartshorne writes, "it was the asymmetry of time, the openness of the future and determinateness of the past." But Bergson, Hartshorne argues, too readily forgot that the denial of determinism, so central to his project, rests on the denial of the symmetry of time. Determinism, Hartshorne urges, following Peirce and Bergson himself, takes an essentially symmetrical view of time. That is why, on Laplace's model, one can as readily retrodict the past as predict the future, given an adequate knowledge of the present state of the world and its unchanging laws. The core of Bergson's message was that the determinism that negates human freedom and closes the open future arises in a false analogy between time and space: Space is an affair of mutual exclusion of elements, "whereas time is an affair of mutual inclusion." By preserving a certain symmetry in both space and time, Hartshorne argues, Bergson compromises the ultimate asymmetry of time and falls into "The most glaring confusion in Time and Free Will."

Voodling in an utterly condensed environment, Sam Renseiw lost track of linear space and time coordinates. View the unfolding of complex views, featuring a temple, a pond, a tea house, several meandering gardens, a veranda, a bridge, a side shrine, a walled dry -garden, a large covered porch , a daruma monk painting and a closing sign, all condensed in a simple travelling shot. On precipitation and destination

“The body, by the place which at each moment it occupies in the universe, indicates the parts and the aspects of matter on which we can lay hold: our perception, which exactly measures our virtual action on things, thus limits itself to the objects which actually influence our organs and prepare our movements.”

Taking an early morning hike, Sam Renseiw reflects on the frailty of framing observance and the obstacles in casting an adequate vote while the rain is pouringdown. On the flow of ascent and descent

"...We notice that the failure of the vital impulse is most infallibly interpreted by the appearance of mechanism. Reality falling asleep or breaking up is the figure under which we finally observe matter: matter then is secondary. Finally matter is a kind of descent; this descent as the interruption of an ascent; this ascent itself as growth; and thus a principle of creation is at the base of things: voodling.."

On his way to a bookshop to purchase a new copy of The Idiot, as the old one apparently got lost, Sam Renseiw took fancy to a bout of concentric, geometrical ascent on foot. The patalab season greetings

“You will obtain a vision of matter that is perhaps fatiguing for your imagination, but pure and stripped of what the requirements of life make you add to it in external perception. Wherever anything lives, there is, open somewhere, a register in which time is being inscribed...Yet,it seems that laughter needs an echo.”

Voodling away with the latest footage for the holiday season, Sam Renseiw sends his warmest season greetings to all faithful viewers and friends. On the unreality of spatialized movement

click for video: Quicktime / Flash and other versions at Blip.tv

"If movement is a series of positions and change a series of states, time is made up of distinct parts immediately adjacent to one another. No doubt we still say that they follow one another, but in that case this succession is similar to that of the images on a cinematographic film: the film could be run off ten, a hundred, even a thousand times faster without the slightest modification in what was being shown; if its speed were increased to infinity, if the unrolling (this time, away from the apparatus) became instantaneous, the pictures would still be the same."

Speculating in situ on issues of matter and memory, whilst winter-clearing the hard disk of clutters of older footage, Sam Renseiw voodled a short and sunny, late summer memory for you. On doors of perception and other spaces

click for video: Quicktime / Flash and v.m4 at for Pc

To summarize some of the principles of Bergson’s philosophy, as outlined in ' The Creative Mind: An Introduction to Metaphysics ':a) ultimate reality is changing, rather than unchanging; b) ultimate reality is knowable by direct intuition; c) intellect and intuition provide two different kinds of knowledge, which can be integrated to produce a unified knowledge of reality; d) intellectual knowledge is relative knowledge, intuitive knowledge is absolute knowledge; e) intuition is a direct perception and experience of the continuous flow of reality, without the use of any intellectual concepts; f) the flow of time as real duration can be experienced only by intuition; g) the intellect may falsify the perception of reality by substituting stability for mobility, and by substituting discontinuity for continuity; h) many voodling problems are caused by the use of conceptual instead of intuitive thinking, and are resolved by the use of intuition as a philosophical method.

Still toggling between potent visual chunks of Inland Empire and recently visited spaces, Sam Renseiw montaged some pieces of virtual footage into a maze-like space.
