Of macro distortion and didactic interior

"…In my Voodling I am acting as a map maker, an explorer of psychic areas, a cosmonaut of inner space, and I see no point in exploring areas that have already been thoroughly surveyed…Thus, your mind will answer most questions if you learn to relax and wait for the answer.."

Paraphrasing Burroughs (a few days after the centenary), Sam Renseiw concocted snippets of left-over interior footage from last summer into some cosmonauting spread of inner spaces… Enjoy meditating on the question(s). [Patafilm # 863, 02'59'', 58 MB, Quicktime/mov - other versions at Bliptv]

On the production of new realities

click for video: Quicktime / .m4v for iPod/iPhone / direct streaming for PC

"In analogue film, light leaves traces on the sensitive emulsion, imprinting on it permanent shadows. The manipulation of two realities - the superimposition of two stills, both traces of material realities - produces something that is already outside the logic of "realism". Rather than represent reality, it produces a new reality... "

Vaguely remembering the insinuation that the only semiotic system capable of interpreting another semiotic system is to be language, Sam Renseiw realised while editing more finish(ing) footage, that voodling makes interior architecture something other, transforms it into a new item. And that new item is, in itself and apart from the fact to which it is referring, an event, that could also be called a "fact". View the new interior artefact by clicking here or on the links above. On voodle impressions and interpretations

click for video. Quicktime / flash / direct streaming for PC

" Interpretation does not, of course, always prevail. In fact, a great deal of voodles maybe understood as motivated by a flight from interpretation. To avoid interpretation, voodle may become parody. Or it may become abstract. Or it may become ("merely") decorative. Or it may become non-voodle. The flight from interpretation seems particularly a feature of abstract video. Abstract video is the attempt to have, in the ordinary sense, no content; since there is no content, there can be no interpretation. Voodle works by the opposite means to the same result; using a content so blatant, so "what it is," it, too, ends by being uninterpretable."

What is important now is to recover our senses, muses Sam Renseiw, quoting Sontag again and paraphrasing further: "We must learn to see more, to hear more, to feel more. Our task is not to find the maximum amount of content in a voodle, much less to squeezes more content out of the work than is already there. The task is to cut back content so that one can see [the] thing at all". ...In today's voodle two distinct spaces are juxtaposed. On the elaboration of certain space(s)

" Every viewer finds him/herself. The voodler's work is merely a kind of optical instrument that makes it possible for the viewer to discern what, without this video, he/she would perhaps never have seen in him/herself....If a little dreaming is dangerous, the cure for it is not to dream less but to dream more, to dream all the time. "

Having - according to his obsessive voodling habits - accumulated more interior footage than needed to manufacture a particular dreamscape, Sam Renseiw montaged recent bits and bites left-overs into a lively, interior spatial triptych. Defence and Illustration of Classical Voodle

click for video: Quicktime /.m4v for iPod /other versions at Blip.tv

"A voodle must be both abstract and figurative. Abstract as a wall, figurative as a representation of space. Voodling is optimistic because everything is always possible, nothing is ever prohibited: all you need is to be in touch with life. And life itself must be optimistic, otherwise everyone in the world would continue to watch TV soaps...To create a new world where man and objects exist in harmony, that is a voodle's aim. As much political as poetic, it explains this passion for expression...almost like painting."

As the voodle is not an art which films life, but is something between art and life, Sam Renseiw montaged footage from his recent application delivery for "The Silent Language", paraphrasing a JLG statement: "Unlike painting and literature, the voodle both gives to life and takes from it, and I try to render this concept in my voodles. Literature and painting both exist as art from the very start; the voodle doesn’t." View the short piece by clicking here or on the links above.
