"Information involved in light as spatial and temporal variations of its intensity, phase, wavelength or other parameters is detected as image data. Images obtained in this way may contain random features in some way, whether they are a natural image, interference fringe pattern, scattering pattern or spectroscopic image, and hence statistical approaches play an important role in their processing."
