Apparitions on smaller scale



Although manatees hardly resemble the voluptuous sirens shown on ancient maps, Columbus immediately labeled them mermaids when he encountered manatees in the Caribbean . . . although he noted they were not as handsome as artists traditionally depicted them. The immensity of the sea had left it traces.

Apparitions on smaller scale can be as astonishing.
