"As a member of the crowd that populates the streets, the Voodler participates physically in the images that he observes while performing a transient and aloof autonomy with a "cool but curious eye" that studies the constantly changing spectacle that parades before him . As an observer, the Voodler exists as both "active and intellectual". As a literary device, one may understand him as a narrator who is fluent in the hieroglyphic vocabulary of visual culture. When he assumes the form of narrator, he plays both protagonist and audience--like a commentator who stands outside of the action, of whom only the viewer is aware, "float[ing] freely in the present tense".The Voodler has no specific relationship with any individual, yet he establishes a temporary, yet deeply empathetic and intimate relationship with all that he sees--an intimacy bordering on the conjugal--inserting a bit of himself into the margins of the image in which he is immersed, a voodle devised by selective disjunction."

" The aesthetic world of the voodler is of a different kind from that of the world about him. Its boundaries enclose a substantially and essentially different microcosm. The voodle as such and the object in itself share a common being, after the fashion of a fingerprint. Wherefore, voodling actually contributes something to the order of natural creation instead of providing a substitute for it. [...] The voodler does not consider his aesthetic purpose and the mechanical effect of the image flow on our imaginations as things apart. For him/her, the logical distinction between what is imaginary and what is real tends to disappear. Every image is to be seen as an object and every object as an image. Hence voodling ranks high in the order of creativity because it produces an image that is a reality of nature, namely, an hallucination that is also a fact. The fact that voodling combines tricks of visual deception with meticulous attention to detail substantiates this."

"The laws of Voodling are subject to the more general laws of habit. Habit is a compromise effected between the individual and his environment, or between the individual and his own organic eccentricities, the guarantee of a dull inviolability, the lightning-conductor of his existence. Or rather life is a succession of habits, since the individual is a succession of individuals; the world being a projection of the individual’s consciousness, the pact must be continually renewed, the letter of safe-conduct brought up to date. The Voodling of the world did not take place once and for all time, but takes place every day."

Habits can appear to be quite extravagant while at the same time remaining just what they are: almost quotidian pathways to be trotted. Nevertheless, Sam Renseiw consciously realises the magnificence of the view(s) every time anew, with awe and humility. Sometimes an urban bicycle trip unfolds like a fairy tale.
